REFLECTOR: Heat Vent Plenum

Though I'm no where near flying, I have two forward oil coolers. The standard installation and an additional connected in parallel with a bilge air blower connected driving air through the cooler and into the cabin through some vents at the bottom of canard bulkhead near the legs. This should allow temp control in the cabin by switching on/off the air pump... if I ever get an engine that is :(

Has anyone done some type of plenum to mix hot air off the fwd oil cooler
with vent air to give
temperature control? Also being able to control were the air is coming out
like floor, panel or defrost. Any
ideas on how to do it would be appreciated.
Thanks

I haven't yet, but I did go look really hard at one of these to do the
job.

I think you can control temp with the hot air and vent air separate. I
use just one at a time and control temp by how much vent air or heated
air I use. The heated air should come out the floor/bottom of canard
bulkhead and the vent air from overhead as close to your head as
possible. Vent air blowing on your head is the most efficient means of
keeping you cool.

I made slide valves for pilot and co-pilot for heat. Control is a
push-pull, top, far left and right corners on the instr. panel. Valve's
right at your feet behind rudder pedals.

Generally its so hard getting enough hot air I never think of mixing in
cold air! ;-)

Sometimes I will actually switch from LOP to ROP because the engine runs
hotter at same power output, ROP. Cost's me a couple gallons an hour,
but its worth it to stay warm! Especially if my favorite passenger is
sitting next to me!

Scott

Couple comments: if you use a panel vent to the windshield use a diffuser. I just used a screen an 1 " hose. My shield now has crazed mildly ONLY where the warm air was blowing directly in my view. Bummer.
Some have used a recirculation of warned air drawing it repeatedly thru the heater with a bilge blower. I tape off 80% of my inlet and use a 12 volt heated blanket. Seat heaters would be better.
2 cents about.

I've selected pictures for the 2013 Calendar, preview pictures can be
seen at the link below. I will order a proof to verify the quality
before I post them for sale. Please let me know if anybody has any
comments or questions.

Darrell,

Calendar submissions were very light, so it will be difficult to put
together a quality offering. I do still plan, over the next week or
two, to try and pull together a new set of pictures for a 2013
calendar. However it will necessarily feature most of the same
airplanes as this year's calendar, which is great for folks that like
those planes, and I will use different pictures for sure...

So... one last plea, if you have a quality picture (preferably
3,000-2,500 pixels square) of a Velocity, and have the rights to use it
(it's not a paid photographer's work for which you do not have
duplication permission), please forward it to me. Again, I would
prefer in-flight shots, but any good picture will be considered.
Thanks!

Just a friendly reminder, since I haven't gotten anywhere near enough
new pictures submitted for next year's calendar, that if you liked the
calendar and want to have one next year, please submit (or encourage
others to submit) your favorite pictures. If you send them to me, I'll
compile them and make the calendar available for order.
