REFLECTOR: My New Youtube Video

I mount my contour+ in the fuselage with the same suction mount in the original video. The contour is pretty neat because it takes gps data and overlays altitude and speed (direction too) over google maps. The thing also has an external mic that picks up the intercom.

Mark & Darrell,

Here are two examples of our Sky3D mount for GoPro cameras (designed for the Velocity and also specifically for the RV's):

[cid:image003.jpg at 01CD8444.82F0E3C0] [cid:image004.jpg at 01CD8444.82F0E3C0]
Velocity -- outboard under wing, facing forward or aft Velocity -- facing outward under the winglet

There are a bunch of issues with using suction cup and other typical GoPro mounts, not the least of course is loosing the camera (and the associated liability!) But, beyond that you won't get consistently good video quality -- the mounts are not stable enough in the wind stream -- with aerodynamic turbulence, variable wing loading, induced engine vibration, etc..

Those conditions create a 'jelloing'/image warping ('drunken sailor', or maybe 'drunken airman') effect in the video, which may come and go with engine and flight conditions, but is always annoying when it screws up your best videos (like the 'jelloing' that makes you wonder if maybe you're looking at Niagara Falls from under the water!) The GoPro only has with a single mount point on the bottom of the camera case -- you need a 3-point attachment for stability (and security).

Beyond security and stability, having the repeatability to re-mount cameras in the exact same orientations is another big issue with standard GoPro 'temporary' mounts. This is especially important for multi-camera and 3D video generation configurations -- both for scenic (air-to-ground) and formation flight (air-to-air) shooting applications.

We (small Sky3D company I recently created) had a booth at Oshkosh this year which some of you saw. Mainly, we're selling software that aligns the independent video streams (created from GoPro cameras mounted out on left and right wingtips) into a high quality stereo video that you can play on any 3D home TV or display (or standard TV with red-cyan glasses), preferably in High Def (1080p!).

Because you mount the cameras 100+ times further apart than the (~2.5 inch separation) of your eyes, the software produces 3D video with 100+ times the depth perception. It doesn't magnify the imagery, but you still feel like you're 100x closer due to the increased depth perception. Flying at 1000 ft AGL, it looks like you're a giant walking on a model train set, 10 feet away from, and able to reach down and pick up the individual houses, bridges and trees.

We make the camera mounts so customers can stably, securely and repeatably mount 3D cameras -- since if you can't mount the cameras easily and properly, we won't be able to sell you our software! The software automatically identifies and removes all camera mounting alignment errors and also does a frame-by-frame (runs all night long on your home PC) fine registration and Left-Right 3D alignment (to correct the dynamic alignment errors that are continuously occurring due to turbulence, wing loading, and vibrations).

If you're interested in either the camera mounts or the software, you can check out our website:

Cool!
Can you post up a pic on how you mounted the cam please?

I just go a new GoPro camera last week. Here is my first attempt at making a video with it.
Turned out pretty good. Pick 720p and watch it full screen.
