REFLECTOR: IO-540J4A5 on XLFG-5

Patrick,

Often the HP differences between engine variants are just a matter of which RPM the rating is made at. For example, the IO-540C is rated at 250 hp, but that’s simply because it is measured at less than 2700 rpm. All major components (case, crankshaft, pistons, rods, cam, fuel servo, etc.) are identical to the IO-540D, but that engine is rated 260 HP at 2700 rpm. In other words, if you simply let an IO-540C turn 2700 rpm, it will make the same horsepower as an IO-540D. There is nothing physically different about an IO-540C that would preclude you from running it a bit faster than the rpm at which the rating was made.

I’m not familiar with the specifics of the particular variant you are asking about, but it would not surprise me to find out that it would happily make more than 250 hp, the same as other IO-540 variants.

Hello All,

I might be able to take over a IO-540J4A5, 250HP turbonormalized for my XLFG-5. Since I am not planning on using short runways, (mostly longer than 3000Ft) I wonder what the thoughts are about putting this engine on my airplane.

I know the recommended engine is 260-310HP.

Thanks,
