REFLECTOR: IFR Flight

I just tell them what I want (convert to IFR) and why. They tell me to hold on and maintain VFR and when to copy clearance. Pretty simple, but if you are asking me that, it sounds like you don't file IFR much or are not rated. No offense, but IFR in FL is a slippery slope. Usually it's clear or thunderstorms. Be cautious.

Andy,

What's the procedure for switching to IFR in flight?

I fly IFR along V198 to KNEW sometimes. It's way easier to go flight following along the coast. Too many MOA to deal with routing there unless they clear you direct. Just convert to IFR if necessary.

Thanks. I was wondering how I could fly IFR through the Eglin E-W corridor. Now I see that's just for VFR traffic?

Its been my experience when flying Velocity aircraft in rain that speeds drop about 5-knots (as you described).
Pitch changes/bumps occur with convective activity. I normally see a small pitch up when entering clouds.
When flying an IFR clearance, ATC airspace, MOA's, TFR's, and Restricted airspace are no longer factors ... fly the clearance.
