REFLECTOR: Velocity Crash at Sebastian - Zen and the Art of Aircraft Maintenance

Each person has their own capabilities. Obviously some people can't handle a 20 knot head wind in a 172. My advice is to be careful and go at your comfort and capability level. Sean Tucker could probably land the plane in a 40 knot cross wind. It doesn't mean that I could nor would I ever try.

Not sure if this applies, but I want to comment on crosswind landings. IMO, a 20kt crosswind alone is no biggie and anyone should be able to handle it. However, a 20 kt crosswind with trees on the upwind side is treacherous and beginners should avoid that at all costs. I did one of those landings today. What happens is that as you descend below the tree tops, you get thrown off course in a hard roll toward the trees. It takes all the stick you can muster just to fight it. It hits you without warning. Even though I knew it would happen, it still took me by a bit of surprise. As you get closer to the ground, that effect goes away and a normal landing can be had. I've never attempted a go-around, but I think that might be the wrong decision since it would keep me in the hard roll condition longer and possibly throw me into the trees, depending on how close they are. FWIW

Just to give everyone an update on the accident since the news always seems to blow things out of proportion. The pilot was unharmed from the crash. the aircraft sustained substantial damage and is a total loss as far as airframe. No fire from the crash. The aircraft was a STD-RG that was bought out of the auction in Winter Haven. There was no mechanical malfunction that led to the crash. The result seemed to be from a lack of a go around and getting too low and slow with high gusting winds. Fortunately no one was hurt in the plane or on the ground.
