REFLECTOR: Fw: [c-a] crash at RR

There has been some tragedy surrounding Geared Drives Inc.  for sure- First
Bud and his daughter, now Lyle,  I was a bit concerned about their addition
of a clutch between the engine and the drive- I know that they had their
reasons for it, and the cause of the crash is just speculation at this
point, but I just felt that it was adding another failure point to the
installation of a dependable engine- I am not sure if they ever figured out
what caused the  crash that took Bud and his daughter's lives, but would be
interested if anyone has any data on that.  From what I hear, a unpowered
Glasair 3 has a very poor glide ratio..

Yes, it was fatal.  A Glassair III with winglets and a Corvette LS1 engine
and Geared Redrives (I'm told, I don't know firsthand) gearbox and I think
it was a Hartzell prop crashed south of the field into a motel.  He was
apparently considering taking over Bud Warren's business after he and his
daughter's crash this summer.

 

I turned over some video I took to the NTSB.  The pilot was Lyle Moss.
Looked like the redrive failed or was underperforming as the engine was
running, but sounded like it was hitting the rev limiter.  He parked next to
us for the day and we spoke to him just before he departed.  He was a nice
guy who was very proud of his airplane.  May he rest in peace.

I've been helping the NTSB and FAA with their investigation of the crash at
RR. I'm trying to establish if the pilot of the Glassair was making radio
calls during his takeoff and short flight until the crash. I've pulled the
following N numbers from my photo files of the first few planes to land just
after the crash. Please e-mail me if you heard anything over the radio from
pilot, either yes or no and what you remember him transmitted if anything.
