REFLECTOR: Epoxy and Carbon Spinners / Lampshade flow guideissue

The transition temperature for EZ-Poxy is about 70 C for room temperature cure, 90 C after a 2 hour 150 F post cure. I think West Systems is about 10 degrees fahrenheit less.

  Alex,

I have a temperature strip on the crush plate of my IVO prop. It's range is 80-90C. Over the years it has slowly reached the maximum. I don't know if 90C will affect epoxy or not.

But what about on the spinner- I doubt that the exhaust was that close to the back plate- did the epoxy vaporize from the heat of the crankshaft? I wouldn’t think that it would get that hot in that location…

The heat from the exhaust pipe caused it. The exhaust was about 1/4" from the cowl.

Did this happen just from the heat of the engine ?

  Was the exhaust real close?

It's amazing how heat can vaporize epoxy. One of my exhaust pipes was too close to the cowl. The epoxy vaporized, leaving a shredded fine mesh of fiberglass.

For folks with carbon spinners (well, really epoxy bulkheads or lampshade style flowguides) should take note of James Redmond's find on the Stagger EZ. I'd been concerned about this since Marc Zeitlin's incident and replaced my spinner bulkhead with a metal one from Spruce, but here is another example of one that overheated and cooked the epoxy, and detensioned the prop bolts. Be careful out there.
