REFLECTOR: Standard edition wheel pants

In defence of the the clown feet, the early Velocity sales literature said something like, "Everything generates lift: the wings, the fuselage, even the wheel pants!" I think whoever designed the wheel pants tried to put a little airfoil around the wheels. And maybe it works. If they do generate a little lift they will be draggier than a more streamlined wheel pant, but theoretically the airplane would be able to drop its nose an imperceptable bit and reduce drag. That would explain why the more streamlined wheel pants don't seem to add any more speed.

For what it's worth, I've got a brand new unfinished pair of original "clown feet" wheel pants that I'll give free to a good home (you pay shipping). First email to me wins...

Nice looking pants. Wish mine came out that nice looking.
Something you might consider is to add vents to the top of the pants to let the
heat out. I do not know first hand but was told by a couple of long easy guys it helps a lot in keeping the wheels cool.

    Andy,

I asked someone at the factory that very question. I have the Old style ones and thought it was worth asking. I was told that they are all about the same as far as speed goes. I think the newer ones may be a little more user friendly to remove/re install.

Since there was really no advantage to buying new ones, I just redesigned my old style ones.

Does anyone know if there are improved wheel pants (more aerodynamic) for the
standards out there? I've seen the XL ones.

If so, how many knots did you gain?

  Hi Renee,
That is very interesting. If you have any links on what you saw would you mind forwarding them?
  Thanks

Those look fantastic. How big a project was this? Seems as if this was fairly extensive on glasswork.
I'm as we'll looking for a better look. My research on speed same as yours: all shapes about the same in drag reduction/speed gains.

I've noticed my MAP is 1-2" higher during climb out compared to after I level off. My inlet air scoop is under the belly. I figure at high AOA there is more pressure underneath. And perhaps the scoop is a bit in the boundary layer during cruise. I'm curious about your findings.

Kerry, I ran across your email and here's my 2 cents worth: I have a standard SE IO360 and after some experimentation, have settled on a air intake system that gives me about 1/2" of positive pressure at 140 knots and at 185 knots TAS 3/4" of boost. This pressure is measured down stream of the air filter (KandN) just prior to the air entering the fuel servo. If you are interested in some of my findings, feel free to call or email me. There has not been any mention of what works best for intake air. If someone has found a good way to pressurize the intake would they share what they have done.
          Thank You

The old oil cooler is a Niagra 2006H and measures approximately 6x8x3”. The new cooler will be a Positech P2008C which measures 8x8.63x3.62”.
  Thanks for the response.
