REFLECTOR: heated pitot

I have a Dynon heated Pitot. The nice thing is that it has temperature
controller, so it gets hot up to 80C, then shuts down when reaches 70C, and
turns on again for few seconds to heat up again repeating the circle.

Advantages:

1) it gets hot, but no excessively hot preventing any longtime body damage.

2) It is very efficient and it use current only if it needs it.

Disadvantage :

1) You need to install the pitot and the controller. You need a bit of
wiring as the controller uses 5 wires, but if you can place them close to
each other it comes with easy to plug connectors, so not a big deal.

2) The signal to your panel is ground, so either you have a Dynon unit
to see the status, or if you want to have a light somewhere then you might
need to be creative on how you connect it.

Not sure of the compatibility or if it is an issue, but Dynon has a heated
pitot for $450 IIRC. Much cheaper than most I think.

Lou,

I have a surplus shark fin pitot static on the nose of my plane. The static
port doesn't work because the pressure wave from the nose messes up the
static reading but the pitot works fine and it's heated. I think you would
need about a 3 foot boom to get the static port to work but I expect you
already have a separate static port. If you look in the AS catalog you wont
be happy at the prices. Try this link.

My standard Velo is an older model and is equipped with a VOR, ILS, and a
GPS for IFR. Unfortunately it does not have a heated pitot, which I
understand is required to have it IFR certified. I am planning on installing
a heated pitot this winter and was wondering what others have used. Any tips
or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
