REFLECTOR: heated pitot

I have the Dynon heated pitot, works great. It has a thermostatic control unit that keeps the temp constant and reduces power consumption. If you have the Dynon EFIS it also acts as an angle of attack indicator which also works great.

This unit is meant to be installed vertically under the wing. If you only use the the pitot tube then you can mount it horizontally on the fuselage under the canard. If you want the angle of attack indicator you must mount it vertically. I made a right angle mount which enabled me to mount it to the fuselage but turn it 90 degrees to vertical. If anyone is interested I still have the mold for the mount.

I regularly fly in IMC, and on a recent trip I picked up light rime ice (unforecast). The pitot heat worked fine, no instrument problems.

This unit does not have a static source, you will still need a static port. I fabricated mine, it's under the pilot door. I took a piece OS 1/4" aluminum tube and glassed it in just under the outer skin, then drilled 3 1/64" holes in it. The position is important, too far forward and it will pick up ram air and moisture if it's raining.

The static port doesn't work because the pressure wave from the nose messes up the static reading but the pitot works fine and it's heated. I think you would need about a 3 foot boom to get the static port to work but I expect you already have a separate static port. If you look in the AS catalog you wont be happy at the prices. I am planning on installing a heated pitot this winter and was wondering what others have used. Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
