REFLECTOR: IFR GPS

Lou;

The 150 XL is not certified for IFR navigation or approaches. Near as I can
tell; the difference between 'certified' and 'non-certified' is not that
they necessarily do anything different; only that one meets the FAA
requirements for part specs, traceability, accuracy, etc.; which the other
has not been proven to do. The built-in GPS in the GRT EFIS I use is not IFR
'certified' but provides all the same navigation options as with an external
'certified' unit. So the difference is if something goes wrong when you are
on an IFR flight plan, or flying that GPS approach with your non-certified
unit - life might get more interesting than you'd like:-).

The old Garmin GTX 300XL is great IFR certified GPS/COM. Now discontinued
by Garmin, but you may be able to find good used one, or even a factory
refurbished, at a good price.

Does anyone know what the difference is between a certified IFR GPS and a
non-certified. I have a Garmin 150XL with a sticker that states "not for
IFR" while others say their 150 XL is certified for IFR.
