REFLECTOR: Continental info

I agree; higher compression, electronic ignition and LOP all go to improved
efficiency. But can it be 30% better? I don't know - if so; that's great.

I would expect the higher compression ratio to reduce fuel burn. Also some
of the others are not running LOP and that makes a BIG difference - 3-4 gph
with my Franklin. I'm curious as to how the CHTs compare to those with
lower compression ratios.

I have an XLRG with a modified IO550N 370 hp 10to1compression pistons, duel
electronic ign, .cruise is 215 kts true at 10-12000ft burns 13gal per hour
in cruise 20 gal /hr on take off and climb.

This seems quite remarkable, and may suggest a check of the calibration of
the fuel flow/air speed. Just sayin' . . based on what others have reported,
and given that fuel burn is roughly directly proportional to HP; and that HP
goes as the cube of speed; 215 Kts would be more in the 16 - 18 gph range.

Hello Reiff,

The 310-hp TCM IO-550N should deliver 200kts while burning about 15gph. If
you were to configure the fuel tanks to hold 80-gallons, this would provide
enough fuel for taxi, runup, climb and a little over 5-hours of endurance at
75% power.

If you purchase a rebuilt engine, install (1) electronic ignition for a few
extra horsepower. Plan on a constant speed propeller - either from MT or
Aero Composites.

You are going to love this engine in your XL.

Best,

Scott B.

I'm considering a Continental IO-550N for an XL RG. What cruise speed do you
see at the settings you quoted . . .?

Don - LOP, 12.5 GPH at 9,500 feet (fixed gear)

Bob -- 85% power LOP, turbo (currently only at low
altitudes)

What are other XL RG owners getting for true airspeed cruise? My mission
requires 200 kts true for 4 hours plus IFR reserves. Any recommendations for
engine or performance mods?

Thanks!

We built our plane before pictures were all electronic but I can scan some
in a couple days if you more details. We are running -N, going on 625 hours
on XL-5FG. We do not have any cooling air going to the engine mounted
cooler, but we are plumbed to a forward nose mounted cooler. We too try to
keep our CHTs below 380. We will occasionally see 400s on a cylinder or two
after climbout on a hot day after a quick turn fuel stop. Typical flight
shows CHTs from 300 to 360 with 2 typically our hottest. We typically see
180deg on the oil in the winter and 190-200 in the summer. We run LOP
exclusively, typically see 12.5 GPH at 9,500 feet and if you believe the
electronics engine analyzer around 75% power. Besides saving gas we have
seen that ROP increases CHTs 30-60 and oil at least 20 degrees. We are
based out of Lancaster in California. Because of all the dirt and dust out
here we did spend the time to build an air intake with inline air filters,
that's probably the only unique thing about our install.

Looking for some info on Continental IO550-N installs.

Specifically, pictures of cooling plenum installations and in particular,
the oil cooler ducting.

As for finished/flying aircraft, what kind of CHTs and oil temps are you
seeing?

Thanks!
