REFLECTOR: Continental info

Reiff,

Our standard cruise is at 18,000 ft, ~62% power LOP, 14 gph, 26" MAP, 2400
RPM, 160-165 KIAS, 190-195 KTAS - depending mainly on aircraft weight. And
of course wind determines the ground speeds. This is currently the power
setting and altitude where we reach our 380 deg CHT limit. We're expecting
to lower the CHTs with further cooling improvements and increase the TAS's
significantly (to 220 to 225 KTAS at 25,000 ft) with a four bladed prop -
we'll see!

I'm considering a Continental IO-550N for an XL RG. What cruise speed do you
see at the settings you quoted . . .?

Don - LOP, 12.5 GPH at 9,500 feet (fixed gear)

Bob -- 85% power LOP, turbo (currently only at low
altitudes)

What are other XL RG owners getting for true airspeed cruise? My mission
requires 200 kts true for 4 hours plus IFR reserves. Any recommendations for
engine or performance mods?

Thanks!

Don-

We built our plane before pictures were all electronic but I can scan some
in a couple days if you more details. We are running -N, going on 625 hours
on XL-5FG. We do not have any cooling air going to the engine mounted
cooler, but we are plumbed to a forward nose mounted cooler. We too try to
keep our CHTs below 380. We will occasionally see 400s on a cylinder or two
after climbout on a hot day after a quick turn fuel stop. Typical flight
shows CHTs from 300 to 360 with 2 typically our hottest. We typically see
180deg on the oil in the winter and 190-200 in the summer. We run LOP
exclusively, typically see 12.5 GPH at 9,500 feet and if you believe the
electronics engine analyzer around 75% power. Besides saving gas we have
seen that ROP increases CHTs 30-60 and oil at least 20 degrees. We are
based out of Lancaster in California. Because of all the dirt and dust out
here we did spend the time to build an air intake with inline air filters,
that's probably the only unique thing about our install.

Looking for some info on Continental IO550-N installs.

Specifically, pictures of cooling plenum installations and in particular,
the oil cooler ducting.

As for finished/flying aircraft, what kind of CHTs and oil temps are you
seeing?

Thanks!
