It was a skytek F12ST1, I don't think they carry it anymore.
#2 wire goes directly from the negative battery terminal to a large engine bolt right
below the starter mount.

Curious what version of the skytec starter you tried?
 
What about the engine ground – where is that located?  Is that #2 wire as well?
