REFLECTOR: Bendix magneto

To have “high altitude” mags you have to have a pressure source (i.e. turbo charger/super charger) to pressurize the magnetos. Increasing the pressure inside the mags prevents the spark from going unintended places inside the magneto.

I just spoke with a guy who repairs magnetos and got the answers to my questions. Turns out they don't make a high altitude mag for the Franklin, so I hope it doesn't become an issue.

What altitude for the high altitude mags? What is the advantage?

I have Bendix high altitude mags and cranking the prop can produce a spark about 1 inch. The IA that built my engine warned me never to hold the mag in my hand and spin the drive unless I wanted to drop it! They are really hot mags.

John...

A bendix puts out about 23000 volts... A slick mag puts out about 17000 volts... 5000 volts makes a big difference... Most electronic ignitions put out over 35000...

Steve

My Franklin engine mechanic tells me that the Bendix puts out almost double the voltage of the Slick. I've never been able to idle at 800, even with a new Slick.

I find it very very hard to believe a New Bendix would outperform a New Slick by any discernible amount.

I do find it easy to believe you removed a wornout/faulty/miss-adjusted Slick with a new Bendix and it performs better. Has nothing to do with Bendix or Slick.

As far as removal I can believe one or the other would be easier depending on the circumstances.

I replaced my Slick mag with a Bendix. I should make a disclaimer that I'm not a representative for Bendix because I have nothing but good things to say. First of all, in spite of the fact that it's a bit bigger than the Slick, it easily fits in the tight space between engine and firewall. Anyone with issues getting the Slick in place should consider the Bendix. Second, it's much easier to set the ball park timing when installing. The harness cap does not have to be removed. It starts better and it idled 50 rpm higher. I have since reduced the idle to 800 rpm which was not possible before. I think it will idle slower, but haven't tried that yet. I don't have crusie numbers yet, but should soon.
