REFLECTOR: Dynon AHARS

You also have to run the pressure/static lines to the remote AHRS. I was bothered when Dynon incorporated these lines into the remote unit instead of keeping them to the back of the main unit like on their D-100. Seems to make more sense to keep them under the panel, whether in a pusher or a backwards plane.

I have considered an access plate, perhaps with the AHRS mounted on it that drops from under the strake (?) as well as the baggage compartment.

However, I mounted mine under my rear passenger seat. Fiberglass and aluminum mounted on and with brass. Not flying yet, installing my Seamech A/C (yes, Houston is hot enough to justify it ;-)). Close though, I hope.

There's a 3" diameter hole underneath at the tip of the strake for wing bolt
access. To me that means the last 3" is not structural. So I'm thinking we
can probably (?) put a 3" wide x maybe 6"-8" long access cover at the tip
without any harm to structural integrity. Because the AHARS needs to be
positioned with its long side (~5") laterally, then it could not be mounted
to the cover (which is 3" across) but instead would need to be mounted to
the underside of the top strake. Would a 3"x 6" (or 8") be big enough for
AHARS maintenance?

There will be wire in that area for the wing tip lights plus the coax for
the antennas. Does this maybe rule out putting the AHARS in the outboard end
of the strake anyway??

I thought about that too, but the outboard area of the strake is structural,
so I didn't want to be cutting into it- probably could reinforce it back up
with triax and all though....

I plan on a Dynon also (when I get to that point). Can't we add an access
panel on the bottom out board end of the strake, similar in construction to
the nose hatch? I think the AHARS would probably have to be mounted to the
access panel itself. That would solve the accessibility issue while keeping
it away from metal etc. Thoughts/comments?

I put the AHARS under the left rear seat. The seats are non-adjustable so
the only nearby metal is the aluminum brackets. I am not yet airborne so I
don't know how the engine will affect it at that location. I located it
where I did because the nose had the battery and oil cooler in it and I
didn't want it the strake where I couldn't get to it without removing a
wing. Not many other options!
