REFLECTOR: Top Gloss

I spoke with the people at Consolidate Aircraft Coatings on this.

First, they used to supply a cross linker with UV Smooth Prime. It turns
out it was a catalyst to help promote adhesion to their top coat. It was
not there to promote adhesion of the Smooth Prime to the fiberglass, or make
the Smooth Prime tougher.

If you had used Smooth Prime, you know the cross linker was prone to turning
into Jello. I learned all this because my cross linker had gone bad and I
called to get some more. If you aren't shooting their top coat, they said
don't bother.

I asked the specifics on shooting top coat on Smooth Prime. IF you are
using their top coat systems, they say a sealer primer is not necessary.
Shoot away.

You may use any other urethane based top coat system with Smooth Primer.
They believe it would work directly on the Smooth Prime. However, they
aren't going to take the time to test the other systems and therefore will
not recommend or warranty it. If you decided to use another top coat, they
want you to shoot a 2-part, epoxy based sealer primer first. Then shoot
whatever you want.

FYI,

Andy

As far as I know there are no restrictions of what to paint over the smooth
prime- I have that on my plane and never intended to go with their top
coat.

I have been on there site I did not see any thing that said they no longer
sell it. Thou all of the distributors I looked at did not list it so Maybe
you are right.

Any thoughts on what to do now that my plane is covered in uv Smooth prime.

I tried ita total waste of money and many hours to remove it. It ran
like a sprinter and never looked as good as any of the normal paints that
are available. Worse, it started to peel off in flight.

I am all but certain that Top Gloss was recalled years ago. It had many
problems including not adhering and flaking off. John Slade, turbo-rotary
powered Co-Z, had to sand all his off.

Originally it was to be used with Smooth prime primer/filler which is still
on the market and currently covers my plane.

When I first got my project there was a great little booklet that showed
every step on how to apply it in conjunction with the Smooth Prime. I
seemed promising...but, well, did not pan out.

I think you can find more information on the Poly-fiber website.

All the best,
