I made a small ground plane for my 406 (Artex), and it works flawlessly. I
accidentally triggered it in my closed hangar and the USAF was on my cell
phone in about 10 seconds. Brett

A 1/2 wave dipole antenna is commonly used. For 406 MHz, 468/406 = 1.15
feet total length, or each leg about 7 inches long. You can make a dipole
antenna with a piece of coax and copper foil tape. I mounted my 121.5 MHz
ELT on the side of the fuselage near the main spar. Picture attached.

I'm installing a new 406 ELT. It comes with a 14" whip antenna that I'd
naturally like to mount inside, out of the wind. The manual calls for
building a ground plane with metallic tape, forming 6-8 radials of 24"
each. I'd sure like to know 1) where are others mounting their ELT
antenna, and 2) where could you possibly form a 48" diameter ground
plane inside the aircraft? Other options? Thanks in advance.
Mark
