REFLECTOR: Another Velo in the air

Dave,

The other effect of trimming both ailerons down a little (to eliminate
'snatch') is that it will create more of an overall nose down moment, and
will require increased nose up trim to counteract.

You will probably notice this the most in the landing pattern, at slow
speeds. It may even result in you not running out of adequate nose up trim
to neutralize stick forces in the landing configuration -- in which case you
can shim the elevator trim motor (to 'tilt' it a little) to re-center the
elevator trim range.

I have been on the phone to Scott and am rigging the ailerons down 1/4' when
they are loaded. I may back off a little after we convince ourselves that
all is working OK. If down too much it makes them sluggish, but certainly
not as scary as the current situation. I also found the another bottom
front of the ailerons had a sharp edge on them. I didn't build these as
some work was done on my kit prior to me getting it. Scott says this wont
cause the "aileron snatch" (his term) that we experienced, but will make it
worse. So, I have rounded the leading edges and reset the rigging. Will
take it up again on Sunday and I will update you then. Note that we have
had no wheel shimmy and the cooling seems fine (however ambient temperature
is only about 45F).
