REFLECTOR: Reflector Digest, Vol 80, Issue 131 - Nose gear fixes

I had the groove in my nose gear tire on my XL too. I showed it to Duane Swing and he confirmed that it was caused by the end of the gear leg rubbing it at high speed on landing. At his suggestion, I filed some of the aft edge of the gear leg off for 1/4 inch clearance between the leg and the tire. I then replaced the nut and the tire. The fix worked and no more scuffing or scraping.

As for the nose gear nut, I bought myself a Pony brand Jumbo 1 15/16th wrench on line from Northern Tools for only $14. It didn't need to be filed down or anything - the open end side worked right out of the box.

I just diagnosed another annoying glitch as well. About midway through my landing roll out, I get a rattle almost like a very mild shimmy. The difference is that it stops immediately if I let up on the brakes. The factory advises that this is caused by a slight warping of the Cleveland brake discs. I am going to replace them and that should eliminate the problem. I can almost guarantee that this developed on my Bahamas trip, which included several hot, fast, heavy and short landings with me standing on the brakes.

New discs are about $ 160 per side plus a few more bucks for the pads. I'm actually happy to find out what was causing the problem and to find that it is such a straightforward fix.

Hope this helps someone else.

Mark

Of course, we got my SEAMECH A/C working great the day before the temperature dropped....sigh ;-)....now, just to fly the darn thing.........
