REFLECTOR: Intercom Static Noise

John,

I had a noise problem once that turned out to be the copilot headset mike touching the doorframe when I was flying solo. I wish all my problems were that easy to fix. Try wiggling the mike plugs in all the jacks to see if you can get static with the engine not running. If there is no static you have eliminated one possible source. The next place to look is where the mike connections plug into the audio panel. Those are the two most likely places for a fault to be located.

Larry,

I have a PS Engineering intercom, panel mounted. Any suggestions for checking the mic connections?

Thanks,
John

John,

I don't know what kind of audio panel you have but with mine the audio to the headset comes from a single amplifier and only the source changes. If this is true for your set up then your symptoms would indicate the noise is from the intercom only. If the intercom is built into the audio panel as mine is then it is likely that problem is in the mike connections to the unit. If the intercom is a stand alone unit, your mileage may vary.

In the next few weeks, I will remove the canard to get my nav ident working and I plan to run a ground from the intercom directly to a ground plane near the battery. I've had good luck fixing other ground issues this way.

Well, my theory just went out the window...

Yes, the noise is present with the alternator off and with the mag off and with the EI off. The noise is only on the intercom. If I turn the intercom volume to "0", there is no noise, i.e. no noise on the radios.

constant noise may be a bad diode in the alternator...... If the alternator is off, engine running, is the noise present?

My door indicator lights are no longer flickering, but the noise is still there. There must be another electrical connection that's loose. When the intercom squelch is all the way off, the noise is constant. At 2/3 of the squelch range, the noise is intermittent. At about 3/4 it goes off, but the mic doesn't pick up my voice very well. Does this sound like a loose connection?
