REFLECTOR: Transponder Antenna

Bob Nuckolls in the AeroElectric Connection says that even though instantaneous transmit power is 150 watts, the average power is miniscule because the bursts are so short. He has no qualms about mounting a transponder antenna under his pilot seat. Even so, he says some people shield their seat with foil when they mount the transponder under their seat, but I've never heard of anyone being concerned about a nose mounted antenna. (That's where mine is.) The field strength diminishes with the cube of the distance, so that the field strength of an antenna 3 feet away is 200 times less than the field strength from an antenna 6 inches away.

  Subject: REFLECTOR: Transponder Antenna

I am going to put my transponder antenna right next to the battery in the
nose of the plane. I have a builder of a long easy that did this and it works
great. My concern was a conversation sometime back about how close to
the antenna we should be because of the microwaves it emits.

Any thoughts on this antenna location?

  Ron
