If it's a regular old wet compass or whisky compass, buy compass fluid from a source like A/C Spruce. There's a large screw on the top to add fluid thorugh. If it's low, generally the unit is leaking. You can purchase a rebuilding kit from A/C Spruce which includes the rear seal and fluid. The rear seal is a diaphram which allows for expansion and contraction depending on temperature and fails.
