REFLECTOR: PUSHER PROP

Jason gave me his name but I couldn’t find it on ntsb, faa reports. He said the blade separated according according to faa from the Vesta prop while on the way to Sun'n'fun, but they wouldn’t give him the details. Apparently, he had an argument with the guy before he left telling him he was suppose to be doing ground testing only per a written agreement (incl a hold harmless). I think he's being sued by the pilots family. He's pretty upset about it. Please don't publish this on the Reflector. Let me know if you find anything.

Chuck,
What were the details on the crash in east TX, was this aircraft using a Vesta prop or what brand were they using and did the prop cause the crash? I didn't see any details in the news, it must have been only reported locally.

I called Jason Day, owner of Vesta a couple weeks ago and he said that the FAA had asked him to not let anyone fly ac 4 cyl Lyco pusher after the fatal crash in east TX of that type of Velocity. He told me he had a few V owners who were doing some ground testing for the 4 cyl V. I think there are some flying in 6 cylinders.
I'm afraid that the Vesta could have the same problem that many other props have with the 4 cyl Lyco pushers. Apparently, MT had problems early on as well with this combination. I believe it is due to the highly uneven torque loadings from the 180 degree firings in combination with the blanking of the wings creating a whipping action that overloads the hub and the blades. Both MT and AeroComposite have very light and strong blades which appear to be able to handle these varying loads without damage, but they are expensive.
I'm using a Catto fixed which I believe will handle the load from my newly turbo normalized Lyco IO-360 (max MP 36.5 in). It's a cruise prop, but with the turbo it now has very good acceleration.

What ever happened to the Vesta prop? I think Dave Dent bought one a while back.
Does anyone know if it worked for him? Or if Dave is on here can he give an update?

I think mine was 15 k. Lead was 4 months years ago. Gained 500 ft min climb and 8 knot at cruise. Blade cross section is much thinner and blades are MUCH STONGER. I'm very pleased. I am unaware of specific testing for harmonics with my io 540 260 hp.

Rene,
How much is a hydraulic AeroComposite prop for an XLRG 300hp IO540, and what is the normal lead time for delivery? Is the cruse speeds comparable to the MT. Has anyone done a harmonic vibration analysis on this prop airframe combination.

I like my AeroComposites prop so much, I painted my entire airplane to match it. :)
110 hours and going strong.

I need a hydrolic MT and the MT that I was using has been working fine for just over 500+ hours. If yours is hydrolic, what would you take for me to sweep it off your floor??..lol. I would like to call you if you could give me your number...
Thanks

Hello everyone, looking for a MT 3 blade prop for a LYC IO360....any advice on where to look without breaking the bank?......Or, does anyone have another brand they like other than MT??

What type, electric or hydraulic? Is the engine counterweighted? I have invested over 18K in my mt for my IO-360-C1C over the past 8 years with still no workable prop. It sits again on my hanger floor fresh from overhaul with new blades and that is where it will stay. Even though it's zero time at this point, I could not sleep at night pushing it off on someone. I have come to the conclusion that the 180' firing pulses on the 360 (200hp) without counterweights are to violent for the bearing/seal design of the mt as this is what fails after approximately 40-50 hours.
Run Forest; Run!!
A friend with a cozy running a IO-360 is running the Aerocomposit with good results.
