I had the same experience taking off (as a passenger) in a KC135 at Seeb
Airbase in Oman. Seemed like we went forever (we always bet on time of
takeoff roll) and then wallowed out over the desert. Must have been 1986 or so
when I was with CENTCOM as a staff officer on a trip to SW Asia. This
particular 135 had not been up-engined, so it was a long drag down the runway
before we got into the air, then I was not sure that I was really glad to be
in the air with the pathetic rate of climb.
I also experienced much the same thing in Apple Valley, CA in my Velocity.
I leaned from that.

I too have dragged my mains through the runway end lights a couple times
on take off. Both times I can credit to underestimating the effect of
density altitude.
Wise call to be overly conservative Al. You and your plane will live
long and prosper!
