REFLECTOR: speed brake & 12 V vs 24 V

Lou,

My elevator trim actuator got stuck in the full up position on my first flight. Made for an interesting landing. When I removed it and tested it I found that it would only get stuck when it reached its limit of travel. I think there's an internal limit switch in the actuator, and maybe it was worn or corroded. I just replaced the actuator.

It was a 12 volt actuator which I used in my 24 volt system by adding a dropping resistor in series. I left the dropping resistor (10 ohms, I think) in the circuit when I installed the 24 volt actuator so that the elevator trim wouldn't be so touchy.

Thanks Scott. I tried that and it worked. Now it goes in and out with no problem. For a couple of cycles, it seemed to get hung up in the closed position but after a couple of cycles it seem to work just fine. What does that mean?

The actuator might in fact be dead; but try screwing in (or out) the actuator shaft several rotations - then hook up the electrics and give it a try.

When I was doing some touch and goes yesterday, my speed brake quit in the up position. I pulled it out to check it today and it worked for one cycle, then quit for good. I can't get it to move in any direction. It is now in the closed position.I need some advice on my speed brake actuator. I believe it has died and needs replacing. If I am reading the wiring correct, when my actuator switch is in the up position, power goes to one of the two leads going into the actuator motor. When I reverse my double pole, double throw, switch into the down position the power now goes into the wire which was ground and ground goes into the wire which was hot. Is that correct? Before I order a new one, is there a way to bench check my old one? I tried using a 12 volt battery charger and reversing the hot and ground onto the leads coming from the motor but nothing happens.
