REFLECTOR: old style elevator trim spring

I put the sparrow strainer on in the negative airfoil configuration for two reasons: 1. More down elevator trim, and 2. Better pitch stability.  Before I put the sparrow strainer on, if I let go of the stick in a nose down trim it would take a LONG time before the plane stopped diving and started climbing. It scared me at first (I wasn't sure I had any positive pitch stability) and I wouldn't wait to find out if it would ever start climbing again. It turns out the plane does have positive pitch stability, but the sparrow strainer with a negative airfoil helps a lot.

Speaking of diving, I explored the high speed envelope yesterday.  Made successive dives at higher and higher airspeeds and wiggled the controls looking for flutter. Didn't find any. 200 kts IAS in a dive is exhilerating.

  This might send us back to the sparrow strainer question.... Do you have one and if so, how is it set.....? Keeping the stick force manageable is essential for easy flying....

  Yes, with 385 lbs in the front seats I needed to pull back on the stick fairly hard while landing.

    I started loading up the front seat yesterday and found I need more elevator trim. I've got the straight fiberglass spring. I remember a few years ago one of the flyers said he made his out of stainless steel and it was working great. If he's still online, do I make it the same size as the fiberglass spring, or narrower?
