     When I bought my plane it was built with the flush static port
ahead of the pilot door. 

    I think I was doing a low pass over the field at Grants, a few
months after I had restored the plane that I noticed the altimeter was
showing an altitude 400 ft above what it should!  I'm not sure where or
who I got instructions on how to calibrate the port by raising the
surface in front of or behind the hole depending on if the relative
pressure was too low or too high.  But it certainly worked and seemed to
work at all flight speeds, though I was most concerned about cruise
speeds.  I was amazed at how much higher my pattern looked from the
plane after I corrected the static port!

    Be interesting to see a before and after test using one of the
raised static disks as used on cessna's, etc...
