REFLECTOR: Oil Type

I would guess the reduction in friction from the synthetic aspect. Too many years ago I raced off road in V W based cars in Las Vegas...I got a new sponsor and switched to Amziol, the early synthetic oil... I was amazed how much less friction we saw. Had to reduce the Idle speed screw, the engine had picked up enough speed there, and our oil coolers ran warm to the touch instead of red hot. I wish you good luck with your efforts here.

John,

Maybe it's viscosity or less friction...or perhaps magic?

Any idea why 10 F drop?

John,

I ran straight 50W for the first 20 hours and then switched to Elite 20W50 semi synthetic. This gave an instant 10F drop in oil temp. There are no full synthetic aviation oils since Mobil 1 was taken off the market because it couldn't handle lead deposits.

I've been using straight 50W oil. I've heard that multi grade will give a higher viscosity/pressure at the higher temp range. Anyone agree/disagree? Also I was recommended the 60W oil used in radial engines. Would that be of any benefit if my oil is running hot?
