REFLECTOR: low end idle speed

Not noticing the stiffle valve was missing was pretty dumb. You'd think that with the butterfly valve completely closed I might wonder how the engine could still be running smoothly at 950 RPMs.

Your normal idle RPM should be in the 650-750 RPM if greater then 800 you are not in the idle range of your fuel control unit. Your idle adjustment is not correct. With 950 RPM on landing your are to high and you will float, believe me. The proper idle adjustment is that with the engine at normal operating temperature the idle adjustment is set at 650 to 700 RPM you should get a 50 to 75 rise in RPM when the mixture is pulled to cut off slowly, not using any jerking motion. If you don't get this then your mixture adjustment is incorrect.

The ECI kit setting are related to fuel pressure settings. For idle and takeoff fuel flows. They are set at two places and a qualified person should do these settings. In most cases these are all set at the factory. To set them they must be done with remote gauges and not the planes gauges. Also calibrated gauges. But even if the pressures are off a little the idle should not be effected that much.

With the Plasma system your engine should be able to idle at less then 500 RPM. If you don't know how to adjust it get an A&P to do it for you. This is a critical setting don't treat it lightly. Also if you have the idle adjustment all the way back then you may have an intake leak that can cause a higher RPM. But this is unlikely if the engine is new.

The prop is unrelated to the idle adjustment unless you are in the micro engineering type senario.

My ECI IOX-360 with dual Plasma IIIs won't idle less than 950 RPMs, and I was expecting to get it down to 800. It runs smooth and strong at all speeds. With full throttle I get 2320 static RPMs at 28.7 MAP with the fixed pitch Prince 68/78 prop. I've calibrated the ECI fuel injection using ECI's calibration kit. There's just no where to go mechanically less than 950 RPMs.

I remember from transition training that if I didn't pull the power all the way back while landing, the Velocity would float forever down the runway, but I don't remember what the low end idle speed was on the factory trainer, and anyway, it had a constant speed prop. Am I going to have any trouble landing at 950 RPMs?
