REFLECTOR: Best way to secure piano hinge wire

That's pretty cool John!

I'll have to wander out to the hangar when I get home from work tonight and see what size my wires are. I really like the finish of those things, and I'd bet they are pretty secure.

Thanks for the tip!

Kurt

Dennis,

?

The top cowl hinges were easy for me as well. I chamfered the hinge barrels a bit so they wouldn't bind. Then I took some valve lapping compound and put it on the hinge wire. Then (like you did) using a drill, I lapped the hinge wire in the barrels so that everything "relaxed". That worked out great, now I can just push them into position with my fingers, but they are still snug. I did the bottom cowl-wing ones the same, I just have to find a method of finishing up/securing those ones so that I like the aesthetics and I'm confident they will remain secure. Should have that figured out pretty soon & I'll let you know.

?

I should probably build an extra support for my pipes near the PSRU, even they aren't as complicated as yours, the extra security there makes sense as well.

?

I got the V-6 video's loaded into the computer, all I have to do now is find a program that will let me edit them a little. I tried the one that came with the camera as well as MS Movie Maker. Both lock up at various points. I'll keep chipping away at that too,

?

Keep On Truckin? :)

?

?Kurt

Kurt,

Thanks for doing the research on securing the hinge wires. The wire for the top cowl is simple. I brazed a 3" pencil size steel rod to the bottom of each wire that fits into my drill chuck. Now the wire's much easier to remove and install than putting the wire into the chuck. I secure the pencil rod in the wing root with a small steel tab.

We got the header welding done yesterday. One pipe was 1/8" from the right side aileron bell crank, so now it's 1.5". That same pipe also vibrated loose at the flange. I have tabs welded down low near the bottom of the collector, but never got to securing it. Bad idea. I'll attach those tabs to the PSRU and use some kind of shock absorber to dampen the vibration.

My pipes come out the bottom of the cowl, so yesterday morning I also finished sanding the balloon on the fairings. It's almost ready for primer and it's starting to look pretty cool. My next task is to finish securing the wire controls for the heater box in the nose and hooking up a scat tube to the keel where my heater dumps hot air into the cabin. While I'm at this, I'll also install the new shock absorber for the nose gear.

Sounds like we're both motivated - the light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter by the week.

Keep in touch,
Dennis

Dennis,

I actually have not finished that part yet. There is an RV builder friend of mine that finished his cowl off nicely and I'd like to duplicate that. He's out on sick leave after back surgery right now, but I should see him soon enough. Once I get all the details on how they did it, I'll let you know.

Got some crude video of the V-6 running yesterday, I'll see if I can figure out how to put it somewhere viewable!

ELT done, GPS antenna done, Next I start finishing the doors for paint.

I know Kurt Winker has the same hinge installation on his cowl. Just wanted to know best way to secure my cowling piano hinge wires. My wires now protrude out the trailing edge of the wing root. I've got a couple of ideas, but I assume there's a preferred method - something tried and true? Anybody know of a web site with photos?

I'm off to the hangar this morning to make some welding mods on my headers. Need to tweak one pipe to give better clearance for the aileron bell crank. I've got a professional welder friend - I manufactured a complex part for his Bearhawk so I get a freebie.

Happy new year to all,

Dennis Martin
