REFLECTOR: Cruise Mystery

Tim,

I've come to the same conclusion. Dave Dent ran my GRT recorded files and said that's what it looked like to him as well. He said the data showed I was crabbed 31 degrees into the wind to hold course and I was pitched up 5 degrees in an attempt to hold altitude as the speed bled down from 160 kts to 113 kts. Next time I'll flight plan a few miles to the south and maybe catch the air mass rising out of the valley and over the main set of mountains east of Knoxville, TN. Free ride.

Chuck Could you have been in severe downdrafts from the mountains when the airspeed started to slow and autopilot indicated the need for nose up. Auto polot was trying to maintain alt. It has happen to me in the same area. I thought it was the engine but nope it was the downdrafts.
