REFLECTOR: Hot Starts

Bob-

  What mixture setting do use when you "pump" the throttle?  When hot
starting our 550, we typically put 1/4 throttle, mixture cut off then as we
crank we feed the mixture in "very" slowly.

  We too have tried the high boost, mixture cutoff, run for 60secs and alls
that seems to do is flood the engine.  So then we have to crack for a long
time with throttle full, mixture cutoff.

  Just like Scott said, if you get the first hand dance correct it will
start fine, screw it up and then you are "that poor bastard out there
flogging the starter to death"...

The hot start technique we use for our custom turbocharged IO-550N may not
be of the 'best form' but it works every time -- we 'pump' the throttle like
you would on a car, with a lot more time spent toward full open (than would
normally feel comfortable on the ground) -- and it always starts quickly.
You just must be ready to pull the throttle back to idle quickly.

They say you can run the Boost Pump on High for 30-60 seconds to recirculate
and cool the fuel and induction plumbing, but on our engine that just pumps
fuel overboard (via the cylinder intake drains) and doesn't seem to make it
much easier to start.
