I make the initial call as "Experimental Velocity..." and then when ATC replies it's either "Experimental" or "Velocity". Whichever they use to acknowledge my call is the one I continue to use when talking to them. Some controllers know what the Velocity is, some don't and they will ask what type of aircraft so I tell 'em.
