REFLECTOR: Engine run

Here is an anecdote from my first engine-run experience.

We had Steve Murphree do the first run. After thoroughly examining the aircraft, he climbed in a to do the run. We had two people stand on each side of the airplane with fire extinguishers.

After a few minutes of run, one of the spotters saw fluid dripping below the plane and called for cut-off. Within seconds, the drip turned into a steady stream. Instead of coming from engine area, it was coming down from the air-brake area.

By then, Steve smelled gas and cut off the engine and hopped out as fast as he could as 100LL filled the cabin quickly.

After determining that the plane is not catching on fire, he tried to shut the fuel supply off using the fuel cutoff without any effect. We clamped the hose from each tank to finally stop the 100LL Niagara Falls.

The vibration from the engine run has split the weak joint of the sump tank and caused the cabin to fill with fuel. The fuel shutoff was downstream of the sump tank and had no effect. We subsequently added individual cutoff at the tank.

I am glad the fuel did not flow backward toward the hot engine area or we might have had some really bad situation at hand.

Unexpected things DO happen... Y'all be safe out there.

Hiroo

Brian that is spot on! Plan the work, work the plan!
