REFLECTOR: Vacuum Pump

Unless it a solid state gyro , which is what they are currently putting in
rockets and missiles, and most modern EFIS systems, and has no moving parts
at all.

A gyro has bearings be it vacuum or electric. I got the same story about my
gyro and if we can put gyros in rockets & in space with many G's loading or
none then maybe the manufacturers should buy good bearings and modern
lubricants rather than the junk they are using.

Larry,

I agree with you totally, though setting on the shelf doesn't do any gyro or
equipment any good...and it may not do it any harm. In my case, the 6 mth
reference was to MCI AI Lifesaver. This is what they blamed the rough
bearings on and wanted to whack me $2720 for an overhaul of a Lifesaver that
had a whooping 75 hours on it. I was displeased to say the least, but we
settled for $1K...this is aviation after all.

Without a doubt, some gyros can set for years without issues, other's can
seem to tolerate setting overnight. That certainly is a benefit of electric
planes....mostly only have to worry that the electrons arrive at the
appointed hours.

Chuck,

I'd like to share my opinions and experience on the gyro issue. The gyros
that are in my panel sat for 9 years and have been working fine for three
years. The rest of this is opinion, so be forewarned. I think that a
manufacturer that makes the 6 mo disclaimer has in fact found a neat way of
getting out honoring their warrantee. Secondly, I'd like to see how anyone
could, if they wanted to, design a bearing that would self destruct during
lack of use. A shaft sitting in a bearing subject to gravity would
logically force out the oil and make metal to metal contact. What isn't
logical is that it would take 6 mo. As soon as the shaft began to move it
would wipe oil into the dry spot. If this was a real problem, which I
doubt, you could solve it by inverting the gyro every month and put it back
on the shelf.

Several of the mechanical gyro instrument manufacturers will only warrant a
6 month shelf life because bearing/lubrication issues if it sets unused for
long period of time and it takes an overhaul to put them back to good
condition. Consistent with the observation that the gyros in a derelict
plane often don't work, or work for long, when they are spun up after a
couple years setting dead.

Another factor could be that gyro instruments, even brand new ones
tend to go bad if left on the shelf and not used. If you have had yours for
several years, they may need an overhaul before they will work.

Looking more and more like I might have to get A Dynon. I bought my 6 ix
pack years ago and just like the look of it. And the price was right. TILL
