Related to the cable being able to slide from side to side, it is a must.  It has to slide or the spring tension will not work correctly to have the doors close together.  That is why we had the bushing put in the strut mount.  
At first I just welded a steel nail to the top of a half piece of steel tubing. Held on with two hose clamps.  This worked great but not elegant. So we went a little neater with it and got the same results.
