REFLECTOR: VG for naca scoop.

Jim,

I found that clipping the vg’s in half, e.g. ½ inch long instead of 1” on
the carnard worked the best for me. I used to fly out of Flagstaff at
7,000. The ½ inch creates less drag on the shorter chord of the carnard,
consequently you get the advantage of a little earlier lift and you’ll find
that you’ll not have to increase your down pressure on the stick when in
cruise after putting them on.

Kurt.

Fallon is 4000 ft and temps in the summer go over 100 so we try to leave
early. So far I have placed 6 sets of vgs on each wing starting at the
outboard end . I flew this weekend early with the temp about 35 degrees and
it did seem to jump off the ground when it did leave but not much less
runway than before. just a more positive climb. stall speed not really
effected. will try the rest of the wings next and maybe a half set on the
canard. My wings were made by Alan Shaw and I was told they are a bit heavy.
my empty wt is 1520.

Will let you know what happens after the next changes.

Jim

Jim,

I would be interested in knowing the results of your tests. Those numbers
are the reason I chose to change power plants on my 173 Elite. My airpark is
at 5000' and temps are routinely 90 in the summer. Can you imagine what that
would do to your takeoff roll? I have to fly to Gunnison Colorado every
other week and the

I have 1/2 lower winglets on mine, and kept the elevator cuffs off . I have
purchased a set of VG's but hadn't planned on putting them on right away. I
would rather keep the wing & canard nice and clean if the performance is
acceptable. I plan on seeing how the thing performs with 340 HP (700'/lbs.
of torque at the prop) and a 76" 3-blade constant speed.

I used NACA scoops for my cooling too and plan on using VG's on them if
needed.

Did you build your own wings & canard, or did you have them built?

Thanks for your info. Kurt
