REFLECTOR: cylinder numbering convention

Lycoming  #1 is the right fwd cyl. and the right rear on the Continentals. 
Odd cylinders on the right even on the left.
Always on a plane the pilot is sitting in the left seat and the gear is down 
and the flaps are up with the power off.  The only difference would be in a 
pusher.  But that doesn't change the numbering.  You are always at the back 
of the engine facing the prop and you go from there.  Also the numbers are 
all on the case at the base of the cylinders.
