Air is a poor conductor of heat. However heat can radiate through the air. Good
conductors of heat such as metals also radiate well, meaning a hot rotor will radiate
heat. An insulating material does not conduct heat or radiate well. An insulating
material can shield from the radiated heat. An air space, needn't be very much, will
allow the insulating material to shed the absorbed heat without transmitting it to the
nylaflow.
