REFLECTOR: Reflector Digest, Vol 44, Issue 87-Turning the plane over

I did turn the plane over on my first project. It was surprisingly simple. I
mounted a 2x4 extending one foot past the end of one of the strakes using
the wing attach holes in the spar. I mounted another 2x4 with a castor to
the canard attach holes using a simple cross piece in an "L" shape. I had
two saw horses ready in the hangar for the strakes.

Here's the key- I had about 8 burly friends come over. We rolled the
airplane out of the hangar, lifted it up until it rested on the strake end
2x4, then everyone got on the other side and lifted it upside down. We then
carried it back into the hangar upside down and set the strakes on the
waiting saw horses. It took about 10 minutes and was almost anticlimactic. I
spent more time feeding my volunteers pizza and beer after we were done.

Hi Andy,

Thank you for your elaborate answer.

Just a clarification regarding your answer:
You said:

"I did flange the tops of the baffles. Very grateful to Joe for sending the
pics and write-up. I too was able to complete the strakes without
flipping the plane. I also was fortunate enough to have the strakes hold
pressure for 24+ hours. Whew..."

I saw your pictures on the web and they are nice. However, if not
absolutely necessary, I'd prefer to go with the standard approach to save
time, hoping that my tanks will not leak. Have these flanges had anything
to do with flipping the airplane over? It seems to me that these are two
ortoghonal issues, but better check.
Is it true than that the main reason for flipping the airplan is to more
easilly install the BID layups between the upper strake and the spar? In
theory, I can see some solutions to that part without flipping the airplane;
as usual, the practice will be the decisive part.

Grigore
