REFLECTOR: priming "how to"?

I see many nice picures of parts which are "primed" using "primers". Also,
the manual I received with my Velocity occasionally talks about priming, but
does not explain it. I have never been exposed to this process and nobody
showed me how to do that during the head-start program. I know this is kind
of a childish question on this list, so I appologise for asking it. Just
finished installing my canard and ailerons and would like to
prime everything to look white and nice. Can anybody help me suggesting
some place where this process of priming, as we need it for Velocity, is
explained? Is it necessary to protect the work underneath, or it is being
used just for aesthetical reasons during the building process? Does it add
any unnecessary weight?

Thank you,
Grigore
