Thanks Ronnie. My springs will stretch but no movement of the bell crank.

I used "belt dressing" from NAPA to make the string sticky.
On the ground, the aileron trim will not move my ailerons. However, there is a definite if not strong trim action in the air. I use mine to level the wings when loaded with one or two folks on the right side versus flying by myself.
You should see the trim springs stretch when on the ground even if it does not move the bellcrank. If the string is slipping then the springs won't change much.

My trim does not work as I would expect it to work in the air. I have not had a great need for it so far because 44Q flies straight and level. However when I get into wind conditions, I know it will be needed. My only experience was with my Long EZ. When I moved my aileron trim on the ground, you would see deflection of up to 1". I don't get that with my VEL.

Lou,
I'm still building my Velocity, but I remember when I installed my trim on the keel fin I had a similar problem: no matter how much I tension the springs or how many times I wrap the cord, the motor runs but the cord slips. I spent more than one day trying to solve this problem, because I naturally expected the motor to engage smoothly the cord. Several builders said at that time when I asked that I should not worry about that on the ground, because it will work in the air. I'm still not sure about that, but for the time being I moved on building other things. Please let me know if you find any better answer to this.
BTW, does your trim work OK in the air?

Thanks Scott. The cord is definitely slipping. What about something like bow string wax. Would that work?

Hello Lou,
It may be weak springs, but more than likely the problem is the cord slipping on the capstan. Wrap the cord around the capstan 2 to 3-turns. It might also be helpful to add 'skicky stuff' (like pine tar) to the cord to make it grip the capstan better.
Best regards,

Hi Guys. Happy New Year to all.
I have a question for the group regarding aileron trim. My Vel is about 18 yrs old. I am going through my first conditional inspection. I have replace some items that I didn't feel were in good condition. I have one area that puzzles me. That is the aileron, cord and spring, trim set up. It may be that my springs are old and have lost their strength but I am not sure. When I engage the electric motor, on the ground, it runs but nothing happens to the ailerons. I do not see any deflection up or down. I am not sure if this is normal or weather something needs replacing. Any help would be appreciated.
