"If Las Vegas wants to limit operations at the airports, then they have to give back all the money that they received for their airports. Simple, but they won't want to do that. They would also have to give up all future grants for LAS (a mainstay for the Las Vegas area). Of course they don't want that either."

I wouldn't put too much faith in current law to prohibit local airport restrictions. If homebuilt aircraft really are more dangerous to the community than manufactured aircraft, and if enough tragic stories are shown on the 6 o'clock news, the rules will be changed by the F.A.A. to allow a local airport to restrict homebuilt activity. The other strike we have against us is that to the average citizen, building and flying one's own airplane sounds a little ridiculous and/or eccentric, which makes it politically easier to prohibit or restrict.

  Bud,

I agree with your statements. The well known Media frenzy that occurs when a plane crashes creates all sorts of uneducated demands and promises. You don't see this kind of frenzy when a blue truck goes out of control and kills 2 other people (the mayor should demand that all blue trucks be banned from the city!).

If Las Vegas wants to limit operations at the airports, then they have to give back all the money that they received for their airports. Simple, but they won't want to do that. They would also have to give up all future grants for LAS (a mainstay for the Las Vegas area). Of course they don't want that either. They just fan the media flames of an unfortunate accident even before any useable information is gathered.

Yes, we need to be as safe as we can. If we banned all flying machines from the sky forever, we probably wouldn't have any more accidents, but that is hardly a realistic approach. I would guarantee (with out even looking it up) that more people died in Las Vegas this month/year/etc. from auto accidents than aviation accidents. I believe a little education, rational thought, and less public bravado from the uneducated is in order.

Lets see what really caused this accident and use that information for all our benefit. It is the least logical thing we can do for those that gave their lives in this unfortunate accident.

  Kurt
