REFLECTOR: failed Prop over Texas (from Last Year)

I think that the problem is weight of the aluminum props more than their
design- they can not compete with wood or composite in that area.

I thought Rutan was running an aluminum CS Hartzell on his LongEZ for
awhile?

I'm not saying that it is impossible to build a blade for a Velo, It's just
hard to get it to be safe. I heard that Hartzell tried and after checking
the vibration, they took their Prop and went home. You don't see Hartzell on
the back of any Velo. Do the research and be SAFE It's experimental but
don't be the experiment!!

Yea- they have a few tractor installations flying now on 4cyl Lycomings-
that should be a good test for them- and they have some pushers operating on
airboats too- I think that Milton was trying to get Velocity to do some
flight testing, not sure what the outcome was of that...

Three times breakout force is a great test. BUT throw in the vibrations that
occur from the turbulent air around the fuselage along with low and high
pressure air over and under the wings. There is a lot of stuff going on
there. I would not fly in a Velo without them doing a vibration survey to it
on the plane, and see if the blades can withstand the beating. When one
blade departs in flight the outcome is usually not good.

Ah yes, Props inc. Reason I ask, is that I saw the Vari-Prop at SNF- looks
like a really well designed unit- constant speed- reasonable price- and they
are going to get Craig Catto to make blades for it- just wanted to make sure
that it was not the same company as the one that lost the blade- I saw the
hub on that one, blade pulled right out-just levt a bunch of spinters in
there- the Vari prop also uses 2 cross pins, but in addition have bolts
like MT. they said that they tested the blades to something like 3 times
breakout force with no failure- just wanted to make sure that they were not
the same folks that made that junky blade that departed that Velo.

Does anyone remember the brand of the prop that failed last year and left
the pilot stranded in Texas for a while? I thought I had that archived here,
but can't seem to find it- I remember that it was a ground adjustable unit,
lost a blade over West Texas, pilot tried a fixed Catto, but it was too much
for his Jabaru he left the plane there fro a while until he could find a new
prop...
