Related to prop control and throttle control to slow the plane down. There
is one factor you must always remember when slowing the plane down on
approaches. "Ring Flutter" When bringing back the throttle try always to
maintain manifold absolute pressure (MAP) at or above 12 inches until the
aircraft has slowed down to the point where the prop RPM follows throttle
movement. Don't prematurely put prop control in max RPM at low MAP. The
reason for this is to prevent ring flutter. This is where the (MAP) is not
high enough to keep the rings tight against the cylinder walls. If they are
allowed to flutter you will wear the ring lands on the pistons in short
order. If you did this over a number of approaches the pistons will be gone
in a very short period of time. It will show up first in lower then usual
compression test. But high oil consumption is another sign. When the prop
follows throttle movement there is sufficient pressure in the cylinders to
prevent the flutter.
The bottom line is keep the rings tight, otherwise pressure on the walls.
When the prop follows the the throttle movement push the prop in. That is to
max RPM.
Plan ahead for all approaches.
Dave
