Tom,
Comm antennas at ground stations (and other airplanes) are all vertically
oriented, which provides vertical polarization to the signal. Your radio
performance will be degraded with a horizontal orientation. If you don't
need much, it might work, but I would be inclined to try to find a way to
get a vertical antenna in.

It appears I do not have a 2nd com antenna glassed in my Velo. Came
across this antenna which mounts inside and doesn't need a ground plane.
Has anyone tried this and had any success?? My thought was to mount it
flat under rear seat as I don't see any easy way to do it vertically.
