REFLECTOR: Reflector Digest, Vol 41, Issue 16- Ceramic coating as alternative to wraps

I had my exhausts ceramic coated inside and out by Jet Hot. They do nice
work, offer a number of finishes and it lowered my CHT's and oil temps.

I have a Lycoming with armpit scoops and I used the thermal wrap on my
pipes. I also did a lot of work on the baffling so I can't say whether
the wrap did much. I was able to reduce my CHTs by around 40-50 degrees
and after the engine has been running you can grab the exhaust pipe with
your hand and it won't burn you.

thats a really good thing. Right after the first engine run on my
engine, I was peering into the hose jungle trying to see where an oil
leak was coming from and yep, grabbed the exhaust stack right where I
had been hanging onto it for 6 months, yow!!! 3 weeks later I'm still
peeling...

Ceramic coating is the long term way to go,( you can also coat the
inside) The wrap will work but has two drawbacks:
1) It will greatly curtail the life of your exhaust system
2) you need to play with it every so often as it will start falling
apart in spots

How does it curtail the life of the exhaust system?

It will have a tendency to hold moisture in and can promote corrosion. It
will also hold all the heat against the pipes. The ceramic will insulate
and keep the heat from getting into the metal.

A similar experience led me to wrap my pipes as well- didn't grab
fortunately, but got me pretty good- you know that pipe didn't "look"
hot...... :) really, I was more worried about proximity to fuel lines, pumps
and wiring- I have a turbo, so the exhaust runs up between the firewall and
the engine- just warm to the touch now.....

I ceramic coated my exhaust before wrapping it- it still got blistering hot
even with the ceramic- I have used exhaust wrap on heavy equipment for over
15 years- these vehicles have semi-exposed engines and exhaust systems that
get wet every time it rains- I have not noticed any degradation in any
exhaust system as a result of the wrap. On my aircraft engine system, I over
wrapped the pipes with self sealing silicone tape in lieu of the silicone
spray that they sell for the same purpose- do not have very much run time on
the system yet, but it all seems to be holding up well
