REFLECTOR: Franklin Fuel Pumps

Wurzel,
Item "1" is bang on. Install your spare pump and you're good to go. Item "2" was not about the fuel pump drive but involves any and all gears in the Franklin. The U.S. gears are cast iron and the PZL gears are steel with a slightly different tooth profile. This combination makes metal in a big hurry.
If you want the whole ugly fuel pump story and or copies of the AD's, give me a call at 913 526-8534.

Hi, Michael! Sorry my first email wasn't very clear.
My engine is a 6A-350-C1, just as you said, and I love it very much. :-)
Mine is carbureted (no fuel injection). I also have no primer. (I saw a
discussion about primers going back through the archives.) I have
the electric IVO and the prop itself works great. I tried buying the
prop governor from IVO and it didn't work well, so I'm still working on a
good solution for a governor.
But back to the fuel pump issue...
The PLL-7-6R is a PZL-supplied sliding vane type fuel pump.
I looked at all of the Franklin documents on tvbf.org, and all of them
are from 2002 or earlier. So, the service bulletin from 2003 isn't there.
I think what I've gathered is the following:
1) In 2002, PZL said all diaphragm pumps had to be replaced. (and the PZL-supplied
replacement is the PLL-7-6R).
2) In 2003, the FAA put out some kind of notice saying that you could NOT mix
american-made fuel pump drive gears with polish-made engines and vice-versa.
If you wanted to put a franklin-america fuel pump into a PZL engine, you had to
swap drive gears on one side or the other so that they are both US or both Polish,
due to a small diameter difference.
I don't know if the 2003 notice from the FAA is essentially the same content as
the 2003 service bulletin from PZL.
So out of curiosity, do you have a franklin fuel pump (ie, PLL-7-6R) or a Weldon
or some other replacement? Are you fuel-injected?
Thanks,
-wurzel

Wurzel,
What is a PLL-7-6R Franklin engine? I though the Franklin engines
used on the Velocity aircraft was the 6A-350-C1.
If that's what you have, there was a AD issued to replace the
piston type fuel pump with a vane type. The AD can be found
on www.tvbf.org under Franklin engines. The Franklin is and
outstanding engine.

After an otherwise lovely flight yesterday, I found blue fuel

that means some seal isn't good any more and I'm grounded
until it's fixed.
I've gone back through various reflector postings on Franklin
fuel pumps, but I'm not sure I have all the information.
My engine has a PLL-7-6R which was installed in Dec 2002.
I don't see anything in the logbook to suggest that
AD # SP- 0048-2003-B was complied with. I'm having trouble
finding Service Bulletins No. PZL-F/75/2003 using
Google. I see lots of references to it, but not the
actual document. Any pointers?
Rick (builder of N570) had a theory when he built the airplane...
"assume every company is going to go out of business and buy two
of everything". So I have a brand-new PLL-7-6R sitting in a
box. From the paperwork it looks like it was produced
in 2002, also before the Service Bulletin.
So, from those who are more familiar with this:
1) Are all PLL-7s junk, or is there some chance I have a workable
spare here?
2) Any pointer on where to find the Service bulletin?
3) Do these pumps have any replacable washers/gaskets etc so
that I could just rebuild the pump that is installed rather
than using my new one? The one that's on there only
has 200 hours on it.
4) I saw the previous posts mentioning a weldon replacement.
It sounded like that was a diaphagm type? Is there any reason
I would want to go back to that instead of the sliding vane?
Many thanks,
-wurzel
