REFLECTOR: Reflector Digest, Vol 34, Issue 84 MT Repainting

I regularly touched up my MT with regular old spray paint. Brendan pointed
out to me that the factory had found that Ace Hardware brand grey matched
perfectly. I used a lightweight filler product called Icing to fill in chips
and scratches before painting. You can keep it pretty new looking with a
little effort. Spray Nine also takes the exhaust marks right off.

I do my mag check at 1100-1200 rpm which is one of the options given in
the manual. I get around 250 rpm drop, but I just listen to see that it
sounds the same for both and the engine runs smoothly for both.

Believe the factory regularly repaints their MT's....perhaps Scott B might
chime in with what they use - don't believe it is anything special...

Yep...talk to us about short field landings Steve? Just what can you pull
her up in with a 4 cylinder Lycoming @ 350rpm? (...and with what
brakes/braking effort...and are your main gear legs still the original
shape? ;^))

On my four cylinder Lycoming, I can get it to idle below 350 rpm's.... Talk

about short field landings...

Hiroo,

John is right, 600 RPM is too slow. The recommended idle is in the range of

750 to 900 RPM. The Franklin has a large valve overlap which works great at

high RPM but is terrible at idle. On engine start I have rough idle at 1000

RPM but by leaning immediately, the RPM will rise to as much as 1300 RPM and

things smooth out a whole lot. If you don't lean for ground operation you
will foul your plugs. My idle is set for 750 RPM but warm-up is 1100-1200
RPM. 750 RPM idle is still rough but 900 RPM makes things tough for short
field landings. As far as I'm concerned, landing is the only time you need
to hit the idle stop.

I have a favor to ask for those who are flying a Franklin.

Would someone able to capture the engine startup, runup, and idling sound

digitally? It does not have to be "audio-phile" quality. Some handheld
device is fine but preferably with gain set low enough that it does not clip

due to high sound pressure.

What I am looking for is.

Startup, running at 1000rpm, runup at 1700rpm, mag-check, then idle with
throttle pulled all the way back.

I am convinced that my Franklin is "missing a beat" but I do not have any

reference to compare against.

I finally got mine running again this weekend (changed the ignition
harness) and it is back to its old trick of growling and shaking. The
shaking is most pronounced when the throttle is pulled back all the way and
the engine is idling at 600rpm or so. You can see the canard tip bounce
around ?" or so at the tip. My wife thought that I had some bolts loose.

   Hiroo

I had the same issue with the steep incline on the seat. In my case it was
VERY difficult to reach the yoke controls in my plane. I have assumed the
incline is not as big an issue with the standard center stick since the
center stick is further from the IP, however, it made it a pain with my yoke
option. I solved the problem and added a few inches of headroom by cutting
the front of the seat rail pillar in half and then bolting together the
lapping over pillars. It brought the seat much more level thus allowing
better positioning to use the yokes, not to mention the added
headroom....now when my hair gets to the "Baptist preacher" height it does
not graze the roof.

Here are some pix on my website. The pix are towards the bottom.

We also have noted the steep seat incline. I found that it is very
difficult to slide the seat forward because you have to "climb" the incline.
I have not done anything to remedy this, but am considering lowering the
front by cutting and re-welding.

I put one of my seat assemblies together last night and made the backrest
angle reclined about 10 degrees from the seat base. I then took this assy
and placed it on top of one of my front seat track rails. This made the seat
assembly reclined to far aft to be comfortable for a front seat. This is the
same angle that is used for the rear rails also but is probably needed for
head clearance for the back seat passengers. It looks like an additional 1
inch will need to be added to the rear of the seat rail assy to bring the
front seat to a proper level. I am interested in what others have done or
added to level the front seats or am I seeing something wrong?

Jerry,
The standard way of mounting the seat rails results - as you mentioned - in
the seat height climbing upwards as the chair is adjusted to its forward
position.
Velocity designed the seat rails to accomodate as many body types as
possible - the rationale being, someone with shorter legs likely likely
appreciates a slightly higher chair for better vis over the instrument
panel.
I've seen some owners modify the standard seat rails by inverting the
mechanism - resulting in a linear movement without an elevation change. See
sketch.
